Cockroach Species

There are thousands of species of cockroach in the world - estimates suggest between 3000 and 4600 different species, with the majority not coming into contact with humans. Only 4 species are actually considered serious pests.

Cockroaches as Pests

Although many of the thousands of species of cockroaches in the world are beneficial in their natural habitat, pest cockroaches can transmit disease, food poisoning, and other serious health problems.

Periplaneta americana 2013

American Cockroach

The largest species of cockroach found in the human environments like homes, kitchens, restaurants, and shops, American Cockroaches grow to around 3-5cm long and produce up to 150 offspring each year. Their shells are a reddish-brown colour, with a yellow ring on the area behind their heads.

American Cockroaches prefer warm, dark, and damp areas and often enter buildings through drains and pipes.

Blattodea. Cascuda. Santiago de Compostela 1

German Cockroach

German Cockroaches are found all over the world and prefer to live indoors, choosing the warmer and more humid areas of a building. Light brown in colour, they have two dark stripes behind the head area and grow to around 1.5cm in length.

German Cockroaches will find any food source possible, including soap and the glue used to bind books. They’re good climbers and use this ability to access anything that could be used as a food source.

Cockroach May 2007-1

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroaches are darker than the other pest species, with a uniform dark brown or black appearance. The grow to between 2 and 3cm in length and prefer cool, damp areas. They are more dependent on water than other cockroaches, so will usually be found where there is a water source.

Often considered the dirtiest of the cockroaches, they crawl through sewers and spread more diseases, prefer to feed on rubbish and decaying matter.

Brown-Banded Cockroach

Brown-Banded Cockroaches are the smallest of the pest cockroaches, growing to around 1cm long. The light bands of colour across their wings is responsible for their name.

They prefer a diet high in starch, and may be found eating wallpaper paste and books. They choose warmer, drier, and higher locations than other cockroaches, and tend not to restrict themselves to kitchens. They don’t require much moisture so can be found anywhere in the property and are more likely to be found up high.

Just want to thank you JPS for the prompt service and professional attitude you showed when recently you undertook the task of thoroughly cleaning and controlling the infestation of cockroaches at my mother's property.
You made what seemed like an impossible task seem easy.

Tony, Plaistow

Just wanted to say a big 'Thank You' for the great job you did for us in removing the wasp nest from our garden which was causing us a lot of stress. Everything is perfect now. No wasps to be seen. Would highly recommend you.

Lisa and Tony, Romford, Essex

We are a mansion block based in Central London for some time had an ongoing issue with roosting pigeons. We asked JPS for their advice and help. Various options were discussed with the merits for all explained and we eventually opted for bird netting with various gates to give us access on our fire escapes. It has worked a treat and solved our problems 100%. We found their team to be professional and courteous and we would highly recommend them.
