Species of Mice

There are many species of mice native to the UK, but only 4 of them tend to be classed as pests that represent a threat to businesses and homes.

Identifying Mouse Species

Not all mice are pests, but these species tend to be. The differences between them affect their habits and preferred nesting areas, but pest control measures are often the same for each of them.

House Mouse

House mice aren’t only found in houses; they can be active all year round and make their nests in any property, home or business. They tend to prefer living on the ground, though they are capable of climbing.

House mice grow up to 9cm long and weigh between 12g and 30g when fully grown. They have relatively small feet and heads for their size, with large eyes and ears. Visually, house mice fit the most stereotypical image of a mouse.

House mice can get a lot of their required liquid from the food they eat, so unless the food is particularly dry, they may not need additional water to survive.

Apodemus sylvaticus (Sardinia)

Field Mouse

Field mice tend to stay outside and don’t come into occupied buildings, however cold weather may drive them inside. They’re more likely to get into outhouses and sheds, making them a particular problem for agriculture.

They grow to around 8-10cm in length (not including the tail) and weigh around 20g, though males tend to be a little larger. Their fur is usually brown, with a yellowish tinge on their sides and white on the belly.

Yellow-Necked Field Mouse

Yellow-necked field mice are more common in rural areas. They are known for chewing through electrical wiring and therefore pose a genuine fire risk in offices and homes.

Their name comes from the distinctive band of yellow fur around their necks. The rest of their fur is brown (on their back) and white (on the stomach).

Yellow-necked field mice grow to approximately 9-12cm long, not including the tail, and weigh up to 45g.

Just want to thank you JPS for the prompt service and professional attitude you showed when recently you undertook the task of thoroughly cleaning and controlling the infestation of cockroaches at my mother's property.
You made what seemed like an impossible task seem easy.

Tony, Plaistow

Just wanted to say a big 'Thank You' for the great job you did for us in removing the wasp nest from our garden which was causing us a lot of stress. Everything is perfect now. No wasps to be seen. Would highly recommend you.

Lisa and Tony, Romford, Essex

We are a mansion block based in Central London for some time had an ongoing issue with roosting pigeons. We asked JPS for their advice and help. Various options were discussed with the merits for all explained and we eventually opted for bird netting with various gates to give us access on our fire escapes. It has worked a treat and solved our problems 100%. We found their team to be professional and courteous and we would highly recommend them.
